Guarding the Unity of the Church
In the life of every church, maintaining unity is crucial. Division can easily creep in when disagreements are not handled with grace and understanding. The apostle Paul warns against divisive people, emphasizing that such individuals can lead the church away from its mission. The unity of the body of Christ is a reflection of His love and purpose, and we are all called to guard it.
When someone is divisive, it’s important to address the situation with love but also with firmness. Paul instructs us to avoid those who cause division (Titus 3:10), not to ignore their behaviour, but to protect the peace and harmony within the church. This doesn’t mean avoiding confrontation but rather choosing to engage in a manner that preserves the integrity of the church while seeking reconciliation.
Titus 3:10 (NIV)
“Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them.”
Reflecting on this verse, we see that dealing with divisiveness requires patience, wisdom and discernment. Sometimes, the first response to a divisive person might be to address their behaviour, gently pointing them toward the truth. However, when such behaviour continues and refuses correction, a more serious action may be necessary to safeguard the community. It’s not about casting people aside, but about protecting the unity and mission of the church. We must always remember that the goal is to restore, not to retaliate.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of the church, where we can worship, grow and support one another in Christ. Help me to always guard the unity of the church, acting with wisdom and grace in the face of division. Give me the courage to address conflicts, to speak the truth in love and to seek reconciliation in all situations. May Your peace reign in our hearts, and may we always reflect Your love in all that we do.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Amen sir. I have had experience with such a person as a member of a church board. This matter you have addressed requires a lot of wisdom to handle and much more seeking the power of the Holy Spirit to come to effect for peace and serenity in such situations and particularly in the lives of such individuals or groups who are divisive. I must confess that it is one of the most challenging time for a minister and the church board with such persons
