Painting Truth with Word's
The Power of Word Pictures in Preaching
Verse: Proverbs 25:11 – “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”
Explain:
This verse highlights the beauty and impact of well-chosen words. Just as an artist carefully selects colours and brush strokes to bring a painting to life, effective communicators use word pictures to make truth vivid and memorable. Jesus, the greatest teacher, frequently used parables and illustrations to help people understand deep spiritual truths. When we speak in pictures, we engage the senses, making our message stick in the hearts of listeners.
Professor Ballast’s teachings remind us that people remember what they see more than what they hear. By using clear, relatable imagery in preaching and teaching, we bring Scripture to life, making it not just heard but experienced.
Reflect:
• How often do I use illustrations and word pictures when sharing God’s Word?
• Do I take time to craft my words in a way that makes truth memorable for others?
• Jesus used everyday examples (seeds, lamps, bread, water). What are some modern-day pictures I can use to explain biblical truths?
Pray;
Lord, You are the ultimate communicator. Thank You for the gift of language and the ability to share Your truth in ways that touch hearts and minds. Help me to use my words wisely, painting pictures that draw people closer to You. Give me insight to make Your message clear and memorable, just as Jesus did. May my words be like apples of gold, bringing wisdom, encouragement, and life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
chua hoo huat,
Thank you for this excellent encouragement and teaching.
Your allusion to the artist and his tools of the trade paints a beautiful portrait of humankind's ability to shape and use words to challenge, compel, and change the listeners.
I am deeply moved by what you have written and I actually prayed the prayer along with you.
Well done, my friend.
