The Call to Follow: Embracing Discipleship with Jesus

The call to discipleship is God’s invitation to follow Jesus and live a life that reflects His teachings. It’s about leaving behind old ways and embracing the new life He offers. Discipleship means learning from Jesus, following His example, and spreading the message of His love to others.

To follow Jesus is to surrender your life to Him, putting Him first above everything else. It’s not just a one-off decision but a daily choice to grow in faith, obey His commands and live for His purpose.

In the Gospels, Jesus clearly invites us to be His disciples, and though it may be challenging, it is also filled with hope. A verse that sums this up is Matthew 16:24:

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.’” (Matthew 16:24, NIV)

This verse reminds us that being a disciple isn’t easy - it requires self-denial and the willingness to face difficulties. But it also promises the joy of following Jesus, serving others, and fulfilling His mission.

The twelve disciples whom Jesus called to follow Him are often referred to as the twelve apostles. These men - Peter, also called Simon; his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee; his brother John; Philip; Bartholomew, also called Nathanael; Matthew, the tax collector; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Thaddaeus, also called Lebbaeus or Judas, the son of James; Simon, the Zealot; and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus - were chosen to be His closest followers and to carry out His mission.

They were called to follow Jesus and learn from Him, becoming “fishers of men” as they spread the Gospel and established the early church. Their commitment to following Jesus changed their lives and the world forever.

In conclusion, the call to discipleship is a profound invitation to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, to learn from Him and to live out His teachings in every aspect of our lives. The twelve disciples, though imperfect, were transformed by their commitment to Jesus and played a key role in spreading His message to the world. As modern disciples, we too are called to deny ourselves, take up our crosses, and follow Christ, knowing that the journey may be challenging but also filled with purpose, growth and the joy of serving others. The call to discipleship is not just a one-time decision but a lifelong commitment to walk closely with Jesus and fulfill the mission He has set before us.
