The Danger of Pursuing Worldly Pleasures

“Whoever loves pleasure will become poor; whoever loves wine and olive oil will never be rich.” – Proverbs 21:17 (NIV)

The Bible warns us about the dangers of chasing after worldly pleasures. While enjoyment in life is not wrong, an excessive focus on pleasure leads to spiritual and even financial ruin. Many people seek happiness in wealth, entertainment, or indulgence, but these things are temporary and often leave them empty. True fulfilment comes from seeking God and living according to His will.

The world tempts us to prioritise comfort and self-gratification over righteousness, but Jesus calls us to deny ourselves and follow Him (Luke 9:23). When we put God first, He provides for our needs and fills our hearts with lasting joy that no earthly pleasure can match.

Heavenly Father,

Help me not to be consumed by the fleeting pleasures of this world. Give me wisdom to seek what truly matters - Your kingdom and righteousness. Teach me to find joy in You rather than in temporary indulgences. Strengthen me to resist temptation and to live a life that honours You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
