Daily Devotional: Hope in the Midst of Sorrow
Scripture: Lamentations 3:21–24 (ESV)
“But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’”
Devotion:
Life doesn’t always unfold the way we expect. Plans fail, relationships break, nations tremble, and sometimes our hearts feel too weary to carry on. Jeremiah, the prophet known as the “weeping prophet,” wrote the book of Lamentations while watching the city of Jerusalem fall into ruin. His heart was crushed, his nation shattered. Yet right in the middle of deep lament, something shifts — a quiet declaration of hope rises.
“But this I call to mind…”
Jeremiah remembers who God is — not based on circumstances, but based on covenant. He reminds himself that God’s love is steadfast, His mercies never fail, and they are renewed every single morning. Even in devastation, God’s faithfulness remains unshaken.
Isn’t this what we need today? In our own modern chaos, when the news is grim, the heart is heavy, and our souls feel drained — we are reminded:
Hope is not the denial of pain; it is the decision to remember God’s mercy in the midst of it.
What if, instead of rehearsing our fears, we began to call to mind His faithfulness? What if, instead of counting what we’ve lost, we remembered what we’ve been given — a portion in the Lord Himself?
Meditation:
Take a moment. Breathe in deeply.
Whisper: “Your mercies are new every morning… Great is Your faithfulness.”
Let that truth settle into your spirit.
What are you carrying today that you need to surrender to the Lord?
Can you trust Him to be your portion — your everything — today?
Prayer:
Faithful Father, in my darkest moments, remind me of Your unfailing love. Help me to remember that Your mercy is not based on my performance but on Your heart. Teach me to anchor my hope in You and not in the shifting sands of life. Today, I choose to say — You are my portion. You are enough. Renew my strength and restore my joy, one morning at a time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Amen 🙏
