Standing Firm in Truth: Knowing the One True God
Scriptural Verse:
“You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3 (ESV)
Throughout history, people have turned to false gods, seeking prosperity, protection and power. In biblical times, Baal worshippers even offered human sacrifices, believing it would bring fertility to the land. Elijah stood boldly against these false beliefs, confronting the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel to show that Yahweh alone is the true and living God (1 Kings 18).
Jesus also warned us about deception, calling Satan the “father of lies” (John 8:44). Satan’s greatest weapon is not brute force but deception - making people believe that he is harmless or even helpful. He is known as the deceiver, tempter and evil one, never a friend of God or humanity. Our call as believers is to stand firm in truth, recognising that we are “living stones” (1 Peter 2:5), built into a spiritual house for God’s glory.
When we, as believers, argue and divide, we hide God’s presence in our lives. Instead, we are to love one another, living as proof that God dwells within us (John 13:35). The name Elijah means “My God is Yahweh,” reminding us of our mission - to proclaim His name and remain faithful, even when the world offers distractions and falsehoods.
Heavenly Father,
You alone are God, and there is none beside You. Help us discern truth from deception, standing firm in faith like Elijah. May we be living stones, reflecting Your love and truth in a divided world. Strengthen us to reject false teachings and remain steadfast in Your Word. Fill us with Your Spirit, so that our love for one another will be a testimony of Your presence in us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
