The Cost of Following Jesus
Verse:
Luke 9:23 (NIV) – “Then he said to them all: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’”
Message:
Jesus didn’t sugar-coat discipleship. He was clear - it involves denial, discipline, and daily decisions. Following Him is not just about receiving blessings; it’s about surrendering our own will, dying to self, and walking in His steps, even when the path is hard.
Explain:
In the first century, the “cross” was not a symbol of inspiration - it was an instrument of execution. So when Jesus said “take up your cross daily,” He was calling His followers to a life of total commitment and sacrifice. This isn’t a one-time decision - it’s a daily choice to put His will above our own.
Reflect:
We live in a world that teaches self-promotion, self-fulfilment, and comfort. But Jesus calls us to something deeper: self-denial for the sake of a greater purpose. Where is He asking you to surrender today? What part of your life needs to be laid down so that His life can rise in you?
Meditate:
Sit quietly and ask: Lord, what cross are You asking me to carry today? Don’t rush the answer. It may involve forgiving someone, letting go of pride, stepping out in obedience, or enduring a hardship with grace.
Pray:
Lord Jesus, You carried the cross for me. Teach me to carry mine with courage and faith. Help me deny myself, not out of duty but out of love for You. Let every step I take draw me closer to You, and help me follow faithfully, even when the road is hard. Amen.
Yes, Amen 🙏
