Growing in Spiritual Fitness

Scriptural Verse:

“Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” – 1 Timothy 4:7-8 (NIV)

Understanding Spiritual Fitness

David Feddes defines spiritual fitness as being close to God and resistant to evil. It is not about being admired by others but about having a heart devoted to God and actively resisting sin. True spiritual growth requires discipline, just as physical fitness does.

To be spiritually fit, the most important thing we need is a new, healthy, and undivided heart. Without a transformed heart, no amount of religious activity can bring us closer to God. Signs of spiritual fitness include a willingness to forgive, an increasing desire for God, faithfulness in spiritual disciplines, and love for others. However, being admired by everyone is not a sign of spiritual fitness.

Growing in godliness means:

1. Growing closer to Christ in experience.

2. Growing like Christ in holy character.

3. Growing like Christ in eternal impact.

As Donald Whitney reminds us, no Christian drifts into godliness; it requires intentional training. This training involves prayer, Bible intake, and spiritual disciplines.

Feeding on God’s Word

To grow spiritually, we must feed on God’s Word. This includes:

• Reading Scripture daily.

• Memorising Bible verses.

• Meditating on God’s Word.

• Listening to biblical teaching.

• Applying biblical truths in daily life.

One thing Feddes warns against is emptying the mind to await a mystical experience - this is not biblical meditation. Instead, meditating on Scripture allows the Holy Spirit to apply God’s truth to our lives.

The Importance of Prayer

Prayer is vital for spiritual growth. It can be spontaneous, scheduled, heartfelt, or guided. A healthy prayer life includes all these aspects. A great way to pray is by using Scripture, such as the Psalms or Paul’s prayers.

Interestingly, the Bible shows different forms of prayer. Moses prayed when Israel was punished with snakes, Hannah prayed in anguish, and Daniel prayed three times a day. However, there is no record of Eve praying for wisdom when tempted by the serpent. This reminds us that prayer should be our first response, not our last resort.

Growing Together in Christ

Christian growth is not just personal but communal. Whitney emphasises that the gospel brings us into fellowship with God and His people. There is no Christlike spirituality apart from the body of Christ, His church.

Reflection

Spiritual growth does not happen automatically - it takes intentional effort. We need to train ourselves in godliness, just as an athlete trains for a race. Are we feeding on God’s Word daily? Are we persistent in prayer? Are we growing in love for God and others? Let us commit to strengthening our spiritual lives through discipline, devotion and dependence on Christ.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to grow in godliness. Help us to seek You daily in Your Word and prayer. Strengthen our hearts to resist sin and walk in obedience. May we grow closer to Christ, reflect His character, and impact others for eternity. Teach us to train ourselves in godliness, relying on Your Spirit every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
